This exhibition is named after Chao’s 1986 painting “The Distant Planet”. Since the 1960s, Chao has preferred to name his works after the cosmos. Not only does the name provoke a sense of detachment and boundless solitude, it also serves as an accurate description of the artist’s adrift and unanchored life of travel. The planets journey across the cosmos, as nature dictates, orbiting around the sun. The sun shines upon the planets’ surfaces, providing the source of life; such is the relationship between our Sun and Earth.
