2016-08-02 ~ 2017-02-12 Medication Meditation

Since the dawn of humanity on Earth, the body has been our most treasured dwelling and the sanctuary of our soul. Faced with a form that is at once familiar and strange, curiosity drives us to explore the universe of the human body; medicine continually pushes boundaries, while art, with its keen sensibilities, offers an alternative way of seeing the body.

The exhibition “Medication Meditation” seeks, through art, to examine the realities of the body and the relationship between medicine and art. Beginning with the Medical Art Corridor, the exhibition responds to the long-standing global connection between medicine and art, bringing together creators such as Dr. Marie Lin, Dr. Kevin Tsai, Nicolas Stedman, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jason Chi, Liu Shifen, Chen Huiqiao and Aron Demetz. Through diverse artistic vocabularies, they guide audiences on an aesthetic journey that engages both intellect and emotion. The exhibition invites us to explore the contributions of art and humanity to medicine, and how medicine inspires artistic creation.

At Asia University Museum of Modern Art, this exhibition reconsiders the role of science in health, the mind, and the meaning of life and death from an interdisciplinary perspective. It opens with British artist Nicolas Stedman’s Body Language 1: a series of sixteen body postures forming an invisible tightrope of time, symbolizing the multiple steps of life’s journey. While we cannot determine the beginning or end of time, we can choose how we walk through it—finding harmony in our understanding and care of the body, between exploration and restoration, and between art and science.
