In leading universities around the world—such as Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, and Cambridge—art museums play a vital role in enriching academic and cultural life. A world-class university should also have a world-class art museum that provides the best environment for living and learning, allowing students and faculty to experience the transformative power of art.

With this vision, Asia University decided to build a world-renowned museum in Taiwan, offering both outstanding architecture and art to the public—establishing an international cultural landmark and elevating the nation’s global image.

We invited the world-renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando to design this museum—his first architectural work in Taiwan. Construction began on January 24, 2011, with six master craftsmen from Japan’s Ishida Construction Company and two senior consultants from Ando’s office stationed on-site throughout the process. After more than two years of meticulous effort, the striking fair-faced concrete museum was completed, standing proudly on the Asia University campus as a new landmark of Taiwanese architecture, officially named the Asia University Museum of Modern Art.

The museum’s grand opening ceremony took place on October 24, 2013, with 750 distinguished guests from Taiwan and abroad in attendance. Mr. Ando himself joined the celebration, remarking that this museum—embodying the beauty of cross-national collaboration and the timeless appeal of global art—uses its triangular design to symbolize the spirit of mutual support among Taiwanese people. He expressed hope that students would learn from this architecture to help and inspire one another with imagination and creativity.

The Asia University Museum of Modern Art not only houses the university’s own art collection but also focuses on works by emerging Asian artists, supporting and cultivating young Taiwanese talent. In addition, the museum actively collaborates and exchanges with leading university museums worldwide—including Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of Tokyo—with the ambition of becoming one of the world’s leading university art museums, shining on the international stage and becoming a source of pride for Taiwan.
