This exhibition tells the story of a group of people whose lives and creations intertwined within a specific time and space. Its beginning traces back to 1983, when Chiang Hsun founded the first university fine arts department in central Taiwan on Dadu Mountain. The threads that connect this story are woven through the artistic exchanges between teacher and students, and the shared life experiences that have unfolded over the decades.

Chiang often reminded his students: “Before becoming an artist, first learn to be a person.”

These words became a lifelong motto for many. To him, artistic creation was not merely a skill but a way of living — an expression of the literati spirit and a form of self-cultivation. This ethos continues to resonate in the works of his students. Many of them did not follow the trends of Taiwan’s contemporary art scene; instead, they chose to focus on their own lives, finding within their personal journeys the path toward creative fulfillment.

In 1983, Chiang led his students on an adventure in search of beauty. Thirty years later, tempered by the trials of survival and competition, they gathered once again to paint — continuing the artistic journey as part of life’s unfinished quest.

This exhibition not only revisits that early spiritual adventure but also reflects on the existential challenges of the present, seeking a faint yet enduring light that guides us toward the future.
