CHUANG Che (1934-) was born in Beijing. In 1935, he moved with his family to Wufeng, Taichung, as the National Palace Museum collection was relocated southward. Along the way, the landscapes and the people left lasting impressions that deeply shaped his sensibility. In 1957, he joined the Fifth Moon Art Group, and through his explorations of literature, philosophy, and art history, he steadily forged his path as a rising talent in the Taiwanese art scene.

Since the 1960s, Chuang Che has incorporated calligraphy into painting, blending collage, ink, and oil to create a poetic language of abstraction. In 1973, he embarked on his journey to the United States, where he experienced the quiet nature of Ann Arbor, the sculptural experiments along the Hudson River, and the metropolitan energy and self-reflection in Manhattan. His works gradually integrated collage, calligraphy, ink, and oil, dissolving the boundaries between East and West, past and present, and shaping a unique visual poetry.

In the millennium, Chuang drew inspiration from classical masterpieces such as Wen Zhengming’s Old Cypress, Sesshū’s Splashed Ink Landscape, and Guanxiu’s portraits of arhats. These references informed his series Variations on Cypress Rock, Sesshū Ink Landscape Variations, and Sixteen Arhats, where tradition and contemporaneity enter into dialogue.

This special homecoming exhibition marks Chuang Che’s first large-scale exhibition in his native region of central Taiwan in over fifty years. “Vivacity‧Overflowing——Chuang Che at 90” showcasing 100 works, highlighting his decades of artistic achievements across East and West, and presenting his singular visual poetry as well as his lifelong exploration of civilization and existence through art.
